Sarah Bernhardt Peony Roots

Grown in the unique climate of Alaska, our Sarah Bernhardt peonies bloom in July and August, making them ideal for summer weddings. Sarah Bernardt peonies are the most famous of all peonies. Ranging from blush-white to bright pink, these oversized flowers will hold for up to two weeks in water.

1-year-old peony roots: These will have between 3-5 flowers the year after they are planted. They reach full maturity after they are 5-6 years old with 25-40 flowers and will last from 20-30 years.

All peonies come in "root balls", it is the peony root with attached soil and amendments attached. This gives the peony the best chance to thrive in its new home after you plant it.

Prepare

  • Even up to 1-2 months in advance, you will dig a hole in a location in your garden or yard with plenty of sunshine. It needs to be roughly 8" deep and 10" wide. Keep the soil, you will use some/all of it later when you plant your peony.

  • You may add some soil amendments, like a 10-20-20 fertilizer (from Alaska Mill & Feed), and small amounts of fishmeal, ground kelp, and ag lime. One to two tablespoons each. Mix these with 2 cups of the soil you dug out of your hole, and put back in, spreading evenly across the bottom.

  • Place something over the top of this hole (such as a five-gallon bucket upside down) to ensure nothing falls in like children or you. This also stops weeds from growing while you wait.

Pickup

  • Please indicate in the drop-down box above if you will be picking up in Anchorage or Soldotna.

  • We do need your phone number and/or email to confirm with you the location, date, and time.

  • Please consider placing something underneath your peony in your vehicle, such as a garbage bag, to ensure your vehicle stays clean during transport.

Plant

  • Simply place the root ball in the hole you've prepared, fill any open space with the soil you dug out.

  • If the plant you received has stems, you may cut this off around 1-2" from the base and throw them away (do not put them in a compost pile)

  • If you would like extra amendments, this time you will do it from the top after planting. At least 8" away from the stems, you may spread a quarter cup of lime, fish meal, and 10-20-20 fertilizer.

  • That's it. In the spring, you may add fertilizer, water lightly at least once a week, and weed around the plant as needed.
